WHO IS GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT?

This Bible study and the two previous ones are very important to the child of God:

a.  Who is God the Father?

b.  Who is Jesus Christ?

c.  Who is God the Holy Spirit?

If you do not understand these three studies you are going to have an uncompleted Christian walk. We are going to have a look at the baptism with the Holy Spirit en the Gifts of the Spirit later.

The Holy Spirit is pictured in the Bible as God, a real person separate from God the Father and Jesus Christ. Because He is a person he has the same qualities as Jesus Christ, God the Father and man. The Holy Spirit is a separate member of the Godhead consisting of three candidates. The three are separate persons or beings but equal in unity. 1 John 5:7, ‘For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. We know when Jesus walked the earth He referred to God His Father in heaven many times. We also know that Jesus spoke of the ‘comforter’ that the Father will send in His name. The Bible refer to the ‘Holy Spirit’ or ‘Spirit of God’ 96 times.

The Holy Spirit is seen as God if we look at the following Scriptures:

1. Genesis 1:2, ‘And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters’.

2. John 4:24, ‘God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth’.

3. Acts 5:3,4, ‘But Peter said, “Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?” Verse 4b “thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God”.

4.  1 Corinthian 3:16, ‘Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?’

5. 1 Corinthians 6:19, ‘What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

6. Romans 8:9, ‘But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his’.

7. Matthew 3:16, ‘And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him’.

NB: There are many more Scripture verses that can be added to the above.

God the Holy Spirit, sometimes referred to as ‘Holy Ghost’, I prefer the ‘Holy Spirit’ is invisible to the naked human eye, but very real. Look at electricity, also invisible but exist; an electrical globe’s light; the wind that blows; radio and tv signals - invisible but it is there; the earth’s gravity - north and south poles, only a few to mention but is real, it is there and we cannot touch it by hand, it exist. There are many books about what the Holy Spirit can do, but seldom ‘who is God the Holy Spirit’. By the grace and knowledge of God I have compiled this study about who this wonderful Person is from the bosom of God the Father. It is only if we know God the Holy Spirit that we can give the honor and worship and glory that we give Jesus Christ and God the Father. We go by the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ to God the Father. According to 1 Corinthians 15:20-28, Jesus Christ at the end time will hand everything back to God the Father.

The Holy Spirit is the only Being that can function or be outside of a physical body. If our spirit leaves our physical body, then it means we are dead. Even Jesus Christ in the human body died when his spirit left His body. We are (a) spirit. (b) soul. (c) body, as is the same with Jesus Christ, God the father and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit comes from the Father as Jesus Christ was the bosom of the God Father; John 1:18, ‘No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him’. John 15:26, ‘But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me’. The Holy Spirit conceived Jesus Christ in the womb of Mary, that is why Jesus Christ is the only begotten son of God the Father.

After Jesus was baptized He was full of the Holy Spirit; Luke 4:1, ‘And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.’ Jesus was the only Person that received the fullness of the Holy Spirit before He was crucified and had risen from the dead. John 7:38-39, ‘He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified’. This verse was revering to the out-poring of the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament time curtain people only received portions of the Holy Spirit, but after the day of Pentecost people receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Reason for this was to receive power to witness; Act 1:8, ‘But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth’.

Remember what happened when John the Baptist baptized Jesus? This was when God the Holy Spirit made His abode permanently in Jesus Christ. God the Holy Spirit is the one that takes our prayers the throne of God the Father. The Holy Spirit knows our thoughts and our inner being. God the Holy Spirit is not more or less that Jesus Christ, they have an equal standing in God the Father’s service. Where Jesus Christ’s ministry stopped on earth the Holy Spirit took over. Read John chapter 14 and 16 with care.

1. John 14:16, ‘And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.’

2. John 14:26, ‘But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

The Holy Spirit is the General Overseer of the Church today, Acts 20:28.

It was once said that the Holy Spirit is like a small bird that a person holds in both of his hands closed together. You can decide to open your hands and let the little bird fly away, or you can squash the little bird dead between your two hands, the decision is yours.

How do we see God the Holy Spirit?

1. The Holy Spirit knows us better than ourselves, He knows our thoughts and mind.

2. God the Holy Spirit represents God the Father and Jesus Christ here on earth.

3. God the HOLY Spirit is with us to teach and guide us.

4. The Holy Spirit lives in each of us that has accepted Jesus Christ.

5. The Holy Spirit represents God the Father and Jesus Christ with-in us.

6. The Holy Spirit lives in us not bodily but in unity with us.
